Description/content

  • The need for preservation, conservation, and rehabilitation of heritage sites is not new, however, working as an expert in the restoration sector is a relatively young specialization in architecture worldwide.

  • In the changing scenario of uncertainty in the world, enhanced efforts to preserve the cultural and architectural heritage for the next generation are required.

  • The Master's Program 'Architectural and Cultural Heritage' is the formal teaching approach in this area.

  • We endeavor to develop new knowledge, raise new questions based on the changing contexts, while at the same time equip ourselves with the best practices in the sector of Building Restoration.

  • Our program is an amalgamation of theory, design, and research and is closely connected with the region's UNESCO World Heritage Sites,

  • There are endless career possibilities for graduates of the Architectural and Cultural Heritage Master's Degree Program.
  •  Some popular choices include working as an expert in restoration projects, project management for historical sites, developing concepts for a thoughtful and intentional approach to restoration and conservation of monuments/ buildings, and historical building research work, often to work in and contribute to the academic fields.

Other
  • This program consists of four semesters and which are broken down into three taught semesters of instruction and one semester dedicated to writing the Master's Thesis.

  • The modular framework of each semester encompasses two compulsory foundation courses. During the first semester, the emphasis is placed upon the study of Theory of Heritage and European Architectural History.

  • The second semester is devoted to the material study of inorganic and organic materials like stone and wood. Practical foundations and comprehensive knowledge of art periods, materials and traditional production techniques are conveyed.

  • The third semester has compulsory courses related to monumental heritage in contexts of Gardens and Landscapes and Urban Design. The fourth and final semester is dedicated to writing the master's thesis.

  • The remaining credits are to be earned from optional subjects, which range from Cultural Heritage of Quedlinburg (in collaboration with Deutsches Fachwerkzentrum Quedlinburg eV), Naumburg or Bauhaus.

  •  Seminars on wood and stone conservation and restoration techniques, building with clay and earth are delivered by subject specialists.

  • At the end of the fourth semester, the Master's thesis is drawn up within a timeframe of twenty weeks, following which the oral examination/ viva takes place. Theses are supervised and final examinations are taken in presence in Dessau or in online mode.

  • Curriculum is designed in a manner so that a student has flexibility of designing his own learning path.

  • Studentenwerk (student services) is an independent organization that is responsible for  student housing in Dessau .
  • For Dessau, you can also check in  the Bauhaus guest house  as many students live there as well. There is a 'special' option for students. (You can live there temporarily for a few days as well.)
  • So, for a short time, you can stay in the  youth hostel  in Dessau.
  • There are many ways to find private housing in Germany. However, you should bear in mind that shortly before the semester starts, it will be more difficult to find a room. So take a look in advance. Usually, the rooms and apartments are offered unfurnished. Most of these apartments even do not have a kitchen.
