Description/content

  • A two-year international master's course at the Faculty of Engineering taught in English
  • Provides interdisciplinary education at the interface of Engineering, Physics and Medicine
  • Allows for a highly individualized curriculum
  • Covers a wide range of fields of contemporary optical technologies - a key technology for the modern world
  • Is part of the Elite Network of Bavaria , an initiative of the Free State of Bavaria to support talented young students.
  • The field of optical technologies focuses on the generation, control, measurement, and – above all – use of light in virtually every area that is vital to society and the economy. The term „photonics“ refers to the photon, the light particle, just as „electronics“ refers to the electron.
  • Light has extraordinary properties which include:
  • focusability down to one millionth of a millimetre (nanometre)
  • the highest achievable speed in the universe
  • shortest pulses of one billionth of a billionth of a second (attosecond)
  • highest output of up to billions of megawatts (petawatt)
  • undistrbed interaction: up to millions of megabits per second (terabits per second)

Costs of living • Cost of living is approx. 750 € to 850 € for a single student. • This costs include a single sharing room, Public transport, Health Insurance, groceries etc. But this varies depending you requirements.

Language requirements
  • Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree in
  • physics or
  • a relevant engineering subject.
  • Proof of adequate English language skills. This can be obtained through English courses completed at secondary schoool or during university studies, experience with English speaking programmes, stays abroad or an international qualification such as Toefl or IELTS (Toefl code: 8265). An international certificate is not (!) mandatory. There is no specific threshold for English language skills, but in the recent years the minimum level of the applicants being admitted was generally approximately equivalent to IELTS 5.5 or Toefl IBT 90.

  • Finding a part time employment is possible once you arrive in Germany. If you speak German, then it gets easy for you.
  • You are permitted for to work for certain number of hours e.g.20 hours/week with a valid study permit.
