Description/content | Arts, Media and Society (BA) Nowadays, the arts and media are inextricably connected to the society in which we live. The Arts, Media and Society bachelor’s programme will take you on an enlightening journey during which you’ll explore the issues in society we currently face from the perspectives of the arts and the media. About the programme After being given a sound art historical foundation of core knowledge and competences, the Arts, Media and Society programme will allow you to explore the impact that art and the media have on society. It will also give you new perspectives on global issues Programme overview Year 1: a strong foundation In year one, semester one, of this multidisciplinary programme, courses that include How the World Makes Art, Big Media and Arts in Society will give you a strong foundation in the field of art history and a thorough grounding in the core subject matter. In semester two you’ll build on this foundation by acquiring general academic skills, such as researching, processing information, writing and oral presentation, before continuing with further courses on art- and media-related disciplines. Year 2: developments in contemporary art and media In year two you'll delve deeper into the impact that art and media have on society, and the many interactions that exist between them. Moreover, social media will be examined as platforms and strategic choices for political and social mobilisations, such as during the Arab Spring, for example. In each of two semesters during year two you’ll follow standard and topical courses and you’ll be able to choose one of two seminars. During the second semester you’ll also do fieldwork into the theory and practice of arts, media and society. Year 3: customise your programme In your third year you’ll be free to customise the programme to your specific interests. This will include a semester in which you can do an internship, study abroad, or follow a minor programme from the Humanities or another faculty. Academically you will advance your theoretical understanding of how art, media and society intersect and interact with one another and you’ll develop and demonstrate your capacity for critical analysis by doing a final thesis. Academic admission requirements | 1. Academic requirements The diploma requirements for admission to the English-taught bachelor’s programmes at the Faculty of Humanities are: Dutch students: • A Dutch pre-university education (VWO) diploma. • A Propaedeutic diploma or final diploma from a University of Applied Sciences (HBO). Proof of your proficiency in English might be required (see below: Language requirements). • A University first year certificate or degree. International students: • an equivalent of a Dutch pre-university education (VWO) diploma. Our admissions Office has drawn up a list of common non-Dutch diplomas that generally meet the minimum academic requirements. Additionally a good level of English proficiency is required. Specific requirements can be found under 2. Language requirements. If your diploma does not meet these requirements you may still be admitted, on condition that you sit additional exams. You will receive more information on this once you have applied. 3. Admission via colloquium doctum Colloquium doctum, which roughly translates as “learned discussion”, is a special admission procedure that you can apply for if: • you do not have a diploma that grants university admission, and • you are 21 or older on the day that your proposed study programme commences As a colloquium doctum candidate, you have to sit a number of exams at Dutch pre-university level (VWO) to determine whether you have the required knowledge to participate in a university degree programme. If you are successful, you will only be admitted to the programme for which you initially applied – not to other programmes or other institutions. Bear in mind that the colloquium doctum route can be very challenging, both during the admission procedure and once you begin your degree studies. The colloquium doctum admission procedure The colloquium doctum admission procedure is the same as the standard application procedure, so you can simply follow the steps in this guide. Be sure to check the colloquium doctum application deadline for your chosen programme, which can be found in the programme information. For most programmes this deadline is 15 October. Accommodation Details | Like many universities in the Netherlands, Leiden University does not have a central campus or student dormitories. Instead, our faculties are spread throughout the cities of Leiden and The Hague and students live in accommodation rented via housing organisations and landlords. In general, students are expected to arrange their own housing. However, for international students, Leiden University Housing Office reserves a limited number of rooms each year for early applicants. The number of housing applications always greatly exceeds the number of reserved rooms. We therefore strongly recommend that prospective students also explore alternative ways of finding accommodation well before arriving in the Netherlands. For more details please check here*https://www.universiteitleiden.nl/en/education/international-students/prepare-your-stay/housing |
