Description/content | Are you interested in the neurocognitive and biological roots of learning, behaviour and emotions in children? If so, the programme in Applied Neuroscience in Human Development might be the specialisation you are looking for. Part of • Education and Child Studies (MSc) About the programme Are you interested in the neurocognitive and biological roots of learning, behaviour and emotions in children? If so, the programme in Applied Neuroscience in Human Development might be the specialisation you are looking for. Applied Neuroscience in Human Development is one of the eight specialisations of the Master’s programme in Education and Child Studies that you can choose at Leiden University. About brain functioning and stress regulation The primary focus in the curriculum of the master specialisation Applied Neuroscience in Human Development is on how knowledge about brain functioning and stress regulation can contribute to educational practice, clinical work, family interventions, and – conversely – how these applications can contribute to optimal neurocognitive and biological functioning. Acquired knowledge and skills As a graduate you will have acquired knowledge and skills in: • The basics of the functional anatomy of the brain, the development of the brain and nervous system, and genetic and environmental factors influencing cognitive development and functioning; • Methods and instruments for measuring and studying the quality of the (central) nervous system, such as EEG, brain imaging techniques such as MRI, parameters of the arousal system such as heart rate and skin conductance, eye tracking, genetics and the hormone system; • Possibilities for prevention and intervention aimed at optimizing brain functioning and the regulation of thought, emotions and behavior. Programme structure The programme of Applied Neuroscience in Human Development is characterized by an interdisciplinary approach. It consists of five substantive courses devoted to the following subjects: 1. Developmental clinical neuroscience 2. Learning, cognition and the brain 3. Neuroscience in clinical assessment and treatment 4. Child abuse and neglect, neurobiological aspects and intervention 5. Methods and instruments in cognitive and affective neuroscience In addition, you are trained in research methods and statistics. Research Internship An important part of the master specialisation Applied Neuroscience in Human Development is the internship. The research internship is an ‘on the job’ training in doing research, with a focus on getting experienced with using neuroscience methods and techniques – cognitive paradigms, EEG/ERP, heart rate, skin conductance, neuroendocrine measures, eye tracking – for data collection and data analysis. Master Project You conclude the specialisation Applied Neuroscience in Human Development with your Master Project, in which you conduct a research in the domain of this specialisation. You write an individual thesis about this research and also give a presentation about it. |

Accommodation Details | Like many universities in the Netherlands, Leiden University does not have a central campus or student dormitories. Instead, our faculties are spread throughout the cities of Leiden and The Hague and students live in accommodation rented via housing organisations and landlords. In general, students are expected to arrange their own housing. However, for international students, Leiden University Housing Office reserves a limited number of rooms each year for early applicants. The number of housing applications always greatly exceeds the number of reserved rooms. We therefore strongly recommend that prospective students also explore alternative ways of finding accommodation well before arriving in the Netherlands. For more details please check here*https://www.universiteitleiden.nl/en/education/international-students/prepare-your-stay/housing |
