Description/content

  • The two-year Master's program in American Studies offers a comprehensive range of courses on US-American literature, history, and cultural and media studies.
  • Conceptually, the program combines current research and teaching as well as diverse forms of self-study and academic training. The program aims at fostering the skills relevant to both academic and professional life.
  • The program offers three complementary areas of study and research. “American Literature and Literary Criticism” covers American literature in the broadest sense and the practice of critical analysis.
  • It deals with the reading and being-read of the United States through diverse types of text. “American Culture and Cultural Studies” examines media such as films or images in terms of their cultural significance.
  • The program’s third area, “American History and Society”, looks at transitions in American society and politics with the examination and evaluation of historical sources.
  • Combined, these research fields facilitate a critical approach towards the nation, the cultural sphere, and the aestheticized and mediatized conceptualizations of what is known as the “USA”.
  • Graduates develop a comprehensive understanding of the terminologies, peculiarities, frontiers and academic discourses of American Studies. Dynamic educational concepts such as “learning and teaching through research” encourage and enable students to engage in autonomous and creative scholarships. Thus the MA American Studies program prepares not only for a Ph. D. and an academic career but also enables graduates to pursue occupations in areas such as publishing, media, politics and public relations.

About University

  • The Goethe University is a cosmopolitan workshop of the future in the heart of Europe. Founded in 1914 by citizens for citizens, it has continued this tradition as an autonomous foundation university since 2008.
  • Critically committed to its eventful history, it is guided by the ideas of the European Enlightenment, democracy and the rule of law and opposes racism, nationalism and anti-Semitism.
  • The Goethe University is a place of argumentative debate; Research and teaching are socially responsible. With Johann Wolfgang Goethe as a poet, thinker and natural scientist, she combines innovative thinking and interdisciplinary action.
  • Founded in 1914 as the first foundation university in Germany by Frankfurt citizens, it is the third largest university in Germany with over 45,521 students (as of winter semester 2020/21).

  • Since the beginning of the last decade, the Goethe University has been going through an unusually dynamic process of change. Signs of this are the reconversion to a foundation university in 2008, quality campaigns in teaching and research, increased cooperation with external partners and an almost complete renewal of the entire structural infrastructure.
  • The new Campus Westend for the humanities, society, Culture and social sciences well advanced around the historical ensemble of the architect Hans Poelzig; the "Science City Riedberg" combines the natural science departments in the immediate vicinity of two Max Planck Institutes.
  • The medical campus Niederrad with the university hospital is also completely renewed. The state of Hesse is supporting this largest new university building project in Germany with well over 1 billion euros. As a "workshop of modernity", the Goethe University has set standards in the social and natural sciences.
  • The achievements of the “Frankfurt School” are of worldwide importance. In the natural sciences, too, Goethe University brings together world-class research: important foundations for the development of chemotherapy were laid by Paul Ehrlich.
  • The Stern-Gerlach experiment changed quantum physics. Scientists from the Goethe University were awarded the Nobel Prize for this.
  • These important lines of tradition are continued today in three excellence clusters that were acquired as part of the federal government's excellence initiative in the natural sciences, life sciences and humanities.
  •  In the Hessian LOEWE offensive, an excellence initiative of the state of Hesse, convinced the university and its partners with four centers and seven focal points.
  • In addition, there are a large number of endowed and guest professorships. As the first German university in the civic tradition, the Goethe University offers a large number of formats that strengthen dialogue with citizens and bring science into society.
  • We respond to social questions in a variety of disciplines.
  • We are committed to the freedom and unity of research and teaching.
  • We research, teach and learn at an international level.
  • We review our own performance constructively and critically.
  • We see ourselves as a learning organization.
  • We ensure transparent management structures and participation of all those involved.
  • We realize equal opportunities.
